Stunning Art Nouveau 'Angel in Prayer' Pendant in Silver , ca 1905
A stunning Art Nouveau pendant in silver, of a beautifully sculpted ‘angel in prayer pose’ with wings. The sides and back are very skilfully crafted and engraved to create a very high level of beauty. There hangs from the bottom, a natural pearl drop set with rubies. The bail is also set with rubies. This lovely piece is attributed to Froment- Meurice . He was one of the m most important French jewellery and silversmiths of the nineteenth century, described by Victor Hugo as the Cellini of his age. He exhibited in a number of international exhibitions, where Queen Victorian and Prince Albert were among his clients. The Renaissance revival and the Gothic revival were his two major decorative styles. A brooch by Froment- Meurice, in the collection of the Victoria and Albert museum, features a similar central figure, an angel with wings but in a silver, oval blue enamel frame.
