Features Overview
Meiji period Shakudo bracelet with gold
A Masterpiece of Meiji Japan
Some jewels are more than adornment - they are miniature works of art.
This extraordinary Japanese shakudō and gold necklace, dating to the Meiji period, circa 1880, is one of those pieces. Against the deep, almost black patina of the shakudō, tiny golden birds appear amongst flowering branches and foliage, each panel worked with remarkable delicacy and joined so that the necklace moves beautifully when worn.
During the Meiji period, Japanese metalworkers brought techniques perfected over centuries of sword fitting and decorative metalwork into the creation of exquisite objects for a new international audience. The contrast of dark shakudō with finely worked gold became particularly prized.
Look closely and an entire landscape reveals itself: birds, blossoms, leaves and fans rendered on a jewel small enough to hold in the hand.
A piece of jewellery, certainly - but also a fragment of Meiji Japan, and a testament to the hand of its maker.

Pearls of the Past: An Italian Love Story
There is something wonderfully intimate about jewels that have survived for centuries.
Dating to around 1800, these exquisite Italian earrings are fashioned in high-carat gold and set with delicate natural seed pearls, their intricate construction reflecting the romance and refinement of the period. The articulated drops move gently when worn, while the irregular lustre of the pearls gives them the unmistakable character of early hand-worked jewellery.
More than two hundred years later, they remain remarkably wearable — dramatic, feminine and entirely individual. Origin & year: Italy, ca. 1800

Natural, lemon coloured sapphire and diamond ring, ca.1880.
Feature 3 -A Garden in Gold: Romantic Italian Earrings, c.1800
Extraordinary jewels are often miniature works of sculpture, and this remarkable pair of Italian earrings, dating to around 1800, is a beautiful example.
Worked in richly coloured high-carat gold with contrasting silver-toned floral details, the earrings are constructed as a succession of articulated elements. Delicate flowers, leaves, textured spheres and tiny suspended forms create an almost botanical composition, designed to shimmer and move with the wearer.
Their exuberant naturalistic decoration reflects the fascination with flowers, gardens and the natural world that ran through European jewellery at the turn of the nineteenth century.
Over two centuries later, their intricate handwork and wonderfully theatrical movement still feel captivatingly alive.
