Berlin Iron suite
A rare offering! A superb suite of Berlin iron from the Napoleonic era. It consists of a pair of matching bracelets that convert into a choker necklace, a brooch and a necklace. This is a matching suite, with the central motif being roses on a silver steel background. The steel is in super condition with small, minor rusting. The mini necklace (shown on picture 1) is not offered as part of this suite. The Berlin iron suite is offered for sale in a cream, velvet, later fitted box.
Berlin Iron has great historical significance as well as being beautiful and lace like jewellery, made as the name implies, of hard, tough iron. During the Napoleonic wars, Prussia had exhausted much of its revenue in the war effort. As the Prussian liberation went on, men offered thier services and women offerd their jewels to the Royal Treasury in an act of patriotism. Ladies that did, received iron jewellery with the motto ‘ich gab geld um Eisen’ (‘‘I gave gold for iron).
