A Beautiful pair of Victorian, Turquoise and 18ct Yellow Gold (tested) Earrings.

A gorgeous pair of butter coloured, heavy weighted, Victorian earrings, with shepherds crooks. These earrings have intricate twisted wire work and ribbon work. The Turquoise are well matched, bright and in good condition, with no nicks or chips. The central smaller cabochons are pave set, and the other larger cabochons are rub over set. There is intricate ‘wire knot’ detail where the top of the earring joins the larger bottom half, attention to detail has not been spared in the making of these lovely earrings. Where the smaller cabs form a ball , the metal is a darker shade. I have not tested this metal. These earrings articulate in between the small circle to the larger one. These earrings are a real pleasure to wear .
Turquoise, is one of the earliest gemstones to be mined, starting 3,000 years ago in Persia (now Iran) and is formed from formed from hydrated Copper Aluminium Phosphate. It was revered for its protection and healing properties to the wearer for those that believed. It was the talisman of kings, shamans and warriors. Originally mined from Persia, it is getting scarcer and scarcer to mine it from there and now the bulk source of supply comes from other countries such as Russia, USA, Afghanistan and Australia to name a few. The name ‘Turquoise’ is derived from the French , ‘pierre turquoise’ – meaning Turkish stone. The trade route that brought this stone in, passed through Turkey and it was sold in its Bazaars to traveling tradesmen from afar and near.
Turquoise is prized as a symbol of wisdom, nobility, power, immortality and luck and this was especially believed by some of the ancient civilizations such as the ancient Egyptians, Persians, Chinese, Aztecs and Incas. Some believe that Turquoise is a universal stone that makes the wearer one with the universe and because of its ability to change colours, it was often used in prophesies.
