Cut Steel Butterfly Brooch ca 1800

£780.00

A lovely, cut steel, early butterfly, ca 1800. It is packed tightly as the earlier ones were and is a super example of its type.

Cut steel jewellery was popular in the nineteenth century. It is ‘set’ with tiny facetted and polished steel studs, fashioned to resemble gem stones and unusually riveted in place. Cut steel came into fashion when Louis XV asked for jewellery to fund his ‘Seven year’ war. They were donated Cut steel jewellery instead. This spurred the fashion in England at this time and Birmingham was the producer.

The butterfly is a lovely example of its type.
